Although this is quite old news, back in August 2007 it is still relevant.
emachines used to be a supplier of some frankly dodgy computers. They used to be one of those brands sold under the DSG (Dixons Stores Group) along with Advent, Packard Bell and a few others.
Gateway used to supply good quality computers about 10 years ago, with a trademarked white boxes with Holstein cow prints in black. The company pulled out the UK to focus on its US market.
Acer bought out the company, which made them No 3 in the US computer market.
I have a customer who has just bought an emachines laptop for about 350+VAT and acer have turned this company into a bit of a Skoda (VW bought the ailing car firm and turned it around using quality parts to be a cheap car in their range) as for the money you get 17" widescreen, full keyboard, 4GB memory, which makes it decent spec for Windows Vista.
Since the computer was purchased before 31st January this year, the owner gets a free Windows 7 upgrade. Unfortunately, this is sent by post and not included in the box so they can charge postage on top.
